Big Wide World!

IMG_4927.JPG

Kia Ora, Hello!

Welcome back to Monday Mag!

What a thrilling mag we have for you! We are coming to you from two different countries, Morgan is interning in America while Emma is still in Hamilton [insert sad face]. This issue we're deep diving into the big wide world, no matter how much we want to take a step into the kiddy pool instead. 2022 is quickly wrapping up. Uni is coming to an end, that's if it hasn't already for some, however, this can be such an uncertain yet exciting time.

Exams are coming up, or exam results are coming out, but is summer just over the horizon? You could be waiting to hear back from a job application, working a summer job and getting a mean tan. Remember to slip, slop, slap and wrap our pasty besties. EVEN if you think you don't burn!

However, Lets Bereal for one second! Emma has no idea what she’s doing in the next couple of weeks. At the moment, Emma's applied for a dozen jobs and has heard the "we regret to inform you" although she did have a phone interview the other day. When her parents asked how she will paying rent in a couple of weeks, her soul dropped out of her arse!

Morgan is coping by blowing all her money on a 'Work Trip’ in LA. This is scary as it has to be expenny but a good time. So let’s manifest the best, as it will all work out for the right reasons!

This week's Music For a Monday is of course...big wide world themed! I am coming at you with a combo of songs that remind me of my recent trip to LA, and many other vacations that have been and gone. Whether this is a hot summer day at the beach or a chilly holiday down south. We all have little snippets of memories through music, and I'm here to share a few of mine!

Speaking of Six60…

“Sixty60 or whatever” made a dig at an Australian Sky News broadcaster, Rowan Dean, as he criticises their tour posters, explaining "big push to be more inclusive of the Māori, the Māori language, the so-called 'iwi' at the moment”. Six60 made a cheeky TikTok addressing the broadcaster's opinion, as the band explains "We got called out for putting Te Reo on our poster, saying it's against free speech". Since then, the band has made limited edition tickets selling for $60.60 for their upcoming concert, along with merchandise for further digs at the Sky News host.

The tea continues over the ditch and beyond…

Comfort for the uncertain

This TikTok is comforting when you are not sure of your plans for the foreseeable future, as it’s a reminder of what the world has to offer and what is waiting for you to discover.

Adulting is like…

Who else has moments of sudden realisation and your like, "I can do whatever I want" - Daniel Hodess is so relatable in this TikTok talking about Christmas advent calendars. I once brought Rainbow Paddle Pops because I heard they are caramel flavoured and not rainbow! Shocking aye! But one day, I ate three of them because I remembered I was an adult and had free will.

Graduation

This tear-jerking graduation TikTok hits even if you didn’t enjoy high school, we recommend waiting at least 3 years post-high school before watching High School Musical 3: Senior Year. Or grab a box of tissues to reminisce the good ole days of shit-talking in study periods and the classic tutu and knee-high stockings fit for cross country, athletics day and swimming sports. https://www.tiktok.com/@siankatemoloney/video/7161981904491777281

Day in the Life of being employed

Wouldn't we all love to hand our CVs to an employer and hear them say “cool, see tomorrow!” however, not the case! Instead, we have to manifest our futures and hope it will look like this - if your want to go into marketing like Morgan and me.

Random Topic .png

This week's random topic has been taken over by none other than yours truly, Miss Americana. Not Taylor swift, but our very own Morgan Ellis. I thought I’d take you through the highs and lows of Los Angeles, and what makes the City of Angels unique.

Rooftop bars

I am fortunate to have had one of my flatmates over in LA with me for the past week. During this time, we have been living the dream! Something we have found ourselves doing quite commonly is ending up on rooftops. Whether this is a rooftop outdoor movie (by the way… it gets bloody freezing here at night and we almost froze at this movie) or a rooftop bar! If you’re ever in a big city- find a rooftop bar. They’re usually free to enter and you don’t even have to buy anything.

Piss on the street

Now, for a lowlight of the city of Los Angeles. We are staying in the heart of Hollywood- right next to Hollywood Boulevard and the walk of fame. To get serious for a second the homeless population here is shocking and so sad. As beautiful as Hollywood is, everywhere has its positives and negatives. But to lighten the mood I thought I’d let you know to take a deep breath in and hold it- or you’re gonna smell a combination of urine and a special green plant.

Starbucks everywhere

Dude. You think New Zealand has a lot of coffee? Los Angeles has a Starbucks at literally every green light I’m not even kidding you. I did however forget what the sizes were called the other day and the workers laughed in my face. The coffee was fantastic though!

 Everyone seems important

Imagine a world where everyone you walk past is just a carbon copy of Kim Kardashian. That is Beverley hills. I kid you not I saw a lady walking in torrential rain with a pocket-sized dog, a pink leather matching set, high heels and bleach blonde hair. But besides the very obvious Beverley hills milfs… everyone here seems important. Whether it be an Uber driver or a barista, you never know who might be sitting next to you at lunch! It could be the film director of the next blockbuster film.

You are never short on things to do

Seriously. I don’t mean to be that bitch but LA has it all. Of course, a huge music scene with a myriad of live music events on nightly (right up my alley) but also every little patch of LA is like a different country. We travelled through downtown LA today and saw Chinatown, we went to Santa Monica yesterday and travelled around Hollywood the day before.

Everything is different

Dude. EVERYTHING here is different. Vacuums are called Hoovers, tips are a thing, tax isn’t added, we drive on the other side of the road, and lastly… what is it with their $1 notes? Everyone says NZ is trailing behind and the USA is living in the future, but the amount of $1 notes I have accumulated is crazy. I like NZ’s coin system much better.

So strap on your celeb-watching sunnies and head on down to this beautiful city!
