Kia Ora, Hello, and Welcome to Monday Mag, you Radical Peeps!

This week we are exploring trends and patterns through the decades. Hence the Friends-inspired couch (we're still waiting for our Chandler).  Some trends have come back which we love- but we will also honour the fallen because they are truly dead and are surely not coming back… Fingers crossed! We also chatted about fashion, although Glassons was our favourite store for probably too long.

We all froth a throwback tune, and I have come in clutch with a collection of the best bangers through the decades. Whether you blast ABBA at pre-drinks, jam out to Backstreet Boys on a road trip, or want some Paramore to scream the lyrics to while you're going through a mental breakdown, this playlist has it all.

Tea of the Week is a weekly round-up of the juiciest tea and drama happening on the internet and around the world, so what’s happened this week?

The Harry Potter trilogy has always had a special place in our hearts, but now more than ever with the passing of Robbie Coltrane who played Hagrid. The actor passed away in the hospital at 72 years old. Co-stars such as Emma Watson, Tom Felton and Daniel Radcliff have shared their condolences on social media for the beloved actor. As Coltrane said in the Harry Potter reunion “I won’t be here sadly, but Hagrid will”. Forever rest in peace.

Alexander O’Connor, also known as Rex Orange County, has been in hot tea as he’s been charged with six counts of sexually assaulting a woman. The UK singer allegedly assaulted the women four times on one day, and twice the day before. Although pleading not guilty to all six counts, the 24 year old has cancelled his European, New Zealand and Australian tour next year as he explains "due to unforeseen personal circumstances, I am having to spend some time at home this year".

Angela Lansbury passed away at the age of 96. Some may know her from ‘Murder, She Wrote’ and others will remember her as the evil Great Aunt Adelaide Stitch from Nanny Mcphee. However, the Irish- American actor has played a lot of characters in her lifetime and she even saved her daughter from the Charles Manson cult. R.I.P Angela.

Don’t Worry Darling was released here in New Zealand. We said we’d break it down so here it is. The psychological thriller takes place in the utmost perfect suburb called Victory in the 1950s. Florence Pugh’s performance alongside Harry Styles was absolutely incredible. The film follows their relationship and as time goes on Alice discovers cracks in their idealised community; as she can’t help but wonder what really goes on at her husband's top-secret job - ‘The Victory Project’. We’re still processing the storyline as we sat confused for what felt like forever and finally the plot was explained but then the film was over. Don't Worry Darling has received mixed reviews, however “My favourite thing about the movie is like…. it feels like a movie” - Harold Edward Styles, 2022, Venice Film Festival.

Adam Levine’s wife, Behati Prinsloo returned to Instagram after her husband’s cheating scandal with a photo of herself pulling the finger. Although this photo seems old, the couple’s Manhattan loft is on the market for $6.23 million. This relationship is def on the rocks, it’s a shame Prinsloo is pregnant as she can’t drink an On The Rocks cocktail.

The stars from Back to the Future, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, embraced a standing ovation at the New York Comic Con. The emotional reunion went viral on social media as the pair discussed the film’s legacy 37 years after it was released.  Isn’t it terrible to see how Parkinson’s has affected Michael J Fox, but how does Christopher Lloyd still look the same?

Back here in Aotearoa, the Tea continues…

The Black Ferns Haka went viral on TikTok as they went on to win 41-17 against Australia. New Zealand’s recent campaign against Wales yesterday was a huge success as the girls brought home a win scoring 56-12!! Go girls!!

Blink-182 announced a global tour kicking off in March 2023 with the original members coming together for the first time in 10 years. Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker will arrive in New Zealand in 2024 and play two shows - Auckland Spark Arena, on the 23rd of February and Christchurch Arena on the 26th of February. How exciting! Aotearoa might experience some Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian PDA.

Two new monkeypox cases have been reported, with one located in the Waikato. The total number of active and recovered cases is now 23,  according to Health NZ "The general risk of contracting MPX in New Zealand remains low," this viral disease is transferred through close contact via skin lesions as well as respiratory droplets, body fluids and contaminated materials.  If you are concerned about your health or possible exposure to the disease make sure to contact your GP or nearest sexual health clinic, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Our favourite tea this week is Peach with a twist of Mango from Healtheries. This tea is exceptional both hot and cold, but even better with a dollop of honey. The tea carries a fond reminder that summer is just around the corner.

If you turn on any popular radio station at the moment, you will hear a myriad of reworked songs from the 80s and 90s. Something that us Gen Z girlies know how to do is make the most out of our environment. Van life is a perfect example of this. Give a 21-year-old a van and an unlimited budget, and we’re gonna make it resemble a 90s home on wheels from your dreams.

Random Topic .png

This weeks random topic is trends that have cycled back around! Some we love, some not so much.

Fashion

Earlier in the week, we asked our followers if they rate or hate certain trends and here the results.

Polls results

As basic but as affordable as Glassons is, they have brought back certain items which slap! For example, Corsets. About half of our followers who interacted with our poll rated this Titty-Popper.

My mum wasn’t pleased when I stole her scrunchies from the ’80s, however, it's fine because 62% of our followers also rate this hair accessory.

I think we can thank Emma Chamberlain for making loafers cool once again and they really popped off this year! 67% also rate these grandad shoes.

Why the hell are low-waisted pants back? I was so happy when these were not cool but I am also happy to report that 77% of people also hate these pants.

Who would've thought Doc Martins would still be trendy especially since this brand was established in 1947? Only 6% of our followers did not rate these boots.

It’s funny because both Morgan and I are wearing overalls as we are writing this and we Monday Mag girls love a comfy overall fit, 66% of our followers also agree!

Knee-high boots somehow came back this year, these results were interesting as 57% hate these boots.

If you're short like ole Emma whose legs aren't in the manufacturer size guide, I’m sorry but flares are not for you. However, if you're average height or just have long legs, GETTT ITTT.  Flares are popular among our followers as 70% rate flares.

Parachute pants came from the 80's but these bad boys are back thanks to Glassons! Unfortunately the majority of our followers don't rate these pants as 57% hate them.

Record players

If you walk into any Bachelor of Arts student's bedroom (especially if they're from Wellington) you are bound to find a record player. Bonus points if they have a David Bowie record.

Music

As mentioned in TikTok Trending this week, it's pretty common to go to a party and hear your parent's favourite 80s tune remixed into a filthy drum and bass track. As well as this, we have TV shows such as Stranger Things to thank for bringing absolute bops such as “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush back to life.

Pastel colours - mag colours

When we were brainstorming colour schemes for Monday mag, the first place our head went was NEUTRAL PASTEL EARTHY TONES! This became the theme for our entire brand. These colours have made a rapid comeback in fashion, interior design, and (guilty as charged) online branding. But hey, 84% of you also rate these colours.

Furniture

Speaking of interior design you'd be lying if you said you hadn't had an adult in your life say “Oh that candlewick bedspread was so hip back in the day!”. From rattan furniture to 70s-style tables and mirrors, it might pay to ask your parents if they have any old furniture lying around that they’re willing to donate to you!

Hairstyles

Farah Fawcett from Charlie's Angels had a beautiful blow out hair style with lots of layers which has made a major comeback. Fawcett would have used rollers, and these have also come back. Now there is a new boss in town, the Dyson Airwrap sucks your hair onto the wander and does the curling for you!

Mullets

Mullets made a soaring comeback from the 80s as Bogans and Farmers keep this trend alive, although some are just fucken flithy. Girls have recently embraced mullet hair cuts and also wolf cuts, influenced by our goddess, Billie Eilish. 23% of our followers rate mullets and we are so pleased to announce 77% hate the hair-do.

American sports team’s merch

DON'T GET ME STARTED on how overpriced the American sports team merch is at places like Sterling Sports, Culture Kings, and even Cotton On! Hit up your local thrift shop to find these for a sweet $5 or under. Also, why does America have such a hold on the world? They probably think we're a part of Australia tbh. Who else thinks that All Blacks merch and even University of Waikato hoodies should be the next “UCLA merch” or “LA Lakers tops”?

To honour the fallen…

We enjoyed having you, but we don’t miss you sorry!
